General
What is ThinkKits?
ThinkKits is an education data marketplace and intelligence platform. We aggregate publicly available federal and state data on — U.S. public schools and organize it into actionable tools for educators, vendors, grant writers, and policymakers. Think of it as a Bloomberg terminal for K-12 education data.
Who is ThinkKits for?
ThinkKits serves four primary audiences:
- Education vendors and EdTech companies — market research, lead qualification, territory planning
- Grant writers and consultants — funding identification, justification reports, compliance verification
- School and district administrators — benchmarking, equity analysis, budget planning
- Policy researchers and analysts — data access, trend analysis, export for custom research
How is ThinkKits different from NCES or other free data portals?
NCES, CRDC, and other federal sources publish raw data files that require significant technical expertise to download, clean, and analyze. ThinkKits does the hard work for you:
- 23+ data sources unified into a single, searchable interface
- Cross-referenced data — funding linked to demographics linked to E-Rate filings
- AI-powered tools like natural language search and justification report generation
- Export-ready formats (CSV, Excel, PDF) designed for real business workflows
- Watchlists and alerts so you never miss a change
Do I need technical skills to use ThinkKits?
Not at all. ThinkKits is designed for education professionals, not data engineers. The web interface uses plain-language search, and the Principal tier includes natural language queries — just type a question like "Show me Title I schools in Florida with over 800 students" and get results instantly.
How does District pricing work across multiple schools?
District is a $499/month platform fee plus $142/month per enrolled school, billed annually on one purchase order. Partial enrollment is allowed — a 5-school district can meter just 2 buildings, and uncovered buildings simply get no workspace. Districts with 16+ schools move to Enterprise, negotiated at roughly $3–5 per student (Est.).
Data & Sources
Where does the data come from?
All education data comes from verified, publicly available federal and state sources: NCES CCD, CRDC, EDFacts, SAIPE, F-33, IDEA, E-Rate (USAC), Title I/II/III/IV-A, USASpending, NAEP, IRS 990s, and Grants.gov. See our full Data Source Catalog for details.
How current is the data?
It depends on the source. NCES CCD data is released annually and typically reflects the prior school year (e.g., 2024-25 data available in fall 2025). E-Rate data updates quarterly. Grants.gov updates daily. USASpending updates monthly. We ingest new releases within 48 hours of publication.
Does ThinkKits have student-level data?
No. ThinkKits exclusively uses aggregate data at the school and district level. We never collect, store, or process individual student records, grades, disciplinary information, or any other student-level PII.
How many schools are in the database?
— U.S. public schools and — school districts across all 50 states, DC, and U.S. territories. This includes traditional public schools, charter schools, magnet schools, and territory schools. Our active school count matches NCES 2023-24 within 1%.
Does the platform include private schools?
Currently, ThinkKits focuses on public schools because federal data reporting is required for public schools receiving federal funding. Private school data (from the NCES Private School Universe Survey) is on our roadmap for future releases.
Pricing & Billing
How much does ThinkKits cost?
Educators choose from four tiers:
- Teacher ($29/mo): classkit suite, Standards Match, funding eligibility, 5 searches/day, saved schools (5)
- Principal ($249/mo per school): full educator suite at school scope, unlimited searches, justification builder, grant writing AI, compliance monitoring
- District ($499/mo + $142/mo per school, billed annually): district-level platform, per-building workspace, fund code mapping, audit lifecycle, compliance across all buildings
- Enterprise (16+ schools): negotiated pricing, everything in District, dedicated advisor, custom integrations
Teacher and Principal bill monthly; District bills annually on one purchase order. Partial enrollment is allowed on District — meter only the buildings you cover.
Can I try before I buy?
Yes. Contact us for a guided demo of any tier before you commit. The Teacher plan starts at $29/mo for a single classroom, so you can try the classkit suite and funding eligibility at the lowest entry point on the ladder.
Can I change or cancel my plan?
Yes. You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel at any time from your billing portal. Changes take effect at the next billing cycle. No cancellation fees, no long-term contracts.
Do you offer purchase orders or invoicing for schools?
Yes. District and Enterprise tier customers can request invoicing, net-30 terms, and a signed order form for procurement. For district-wide deployments, contact sales@thinkkits.com for a custom quote and W-9.
Can I use federal funds (Title I, Title IV-A) to pay for ThinkKits?
This depends on how you use the platform and your LEA's allowable cost guidelines. ThinkKits can generate justification reports that align your subscription to specific federal funding pathways. Contact us for a procurement-ready justification.
Features & Tools
What are Tool Stacks?
Tool Stacks are thematic groupings of features: School Intelligence, Funding & Grants, Data & Analytics, Vendor Intelligence, and Watchlists & Alerts. Teacher customers work in the classkit suite; Principal and above unlock the full educator suite across every stack.
What is the Justification Report Generator?
An AI-powered tool that generates audit-ready funding justification reports. You select a school and a product/service, and it produces a document with the correct compliance language, per-pupil cost calculations, funding pathway alignment (Title I, IV-A, IDEA), and implementation plan. Available on Principal tier and above.
What is the School Health Score?
A composite 0-100 metric that combines funding adequacy, demographic equity, and performance indicators into a single at-a-glance score. It helps you quickly identify schools that may need resources or intervention. Available on Principal tier.
Can I export data?
Yes. Principal and above can export search results as CSV, plus Excel and custom report formats. District tier includes bulk export (up to 10,000 records at once) and scheduled automated exports across every enrolled building.
Does ThinkKits have a mobile app?
Not yet. ThinkKits is a responsive web application that works well on tablets and phones. A dedicated mobile app is on our roadmap for late 2026.
